Fellows

The GB11 Biennale Fellows consist of roughly one hundred small- and medium-scale art organizations across the world whose work makes important contributions to the art of today, yet remains under the radar. Biennale Fellows will continue doing the important work they normally do, without GB11 being involved in their activities.
These organizations often function as the research and development department of the art world, generating new ideas, supporting artists to allow them to experiment and cultivate their practices, shaping new curatorial and educational methods, and fostering active relationships to their field as well as to their physical, social, and political environments. Yet the significance of their works for a wider art and social ecology has not been acknowledged enough.

To All the Contributing Factors

The Forum entitled To All the Contributing Factoris, consists of three days of activities dedicated to questions of value, continuity, and scale through the lens of the art organizational practices of the so-called Biennale Fellows, around 100 small and mid-size “differential” art organizations from various parts of the world, and imagining acts in common. Representatives from about 80 of the Fellows will participate in the Forum.

The Forum will take place at several locations, including the Gwangju Biennale Hall, 518 Archives, Gwangju International Center, Mite-Ugro, and May Mother's House.

C/o (Care of), Milan

self-presentation:

Founded in 1987 in the outskirts of North Milan by a group of artists, Careof immediately distinguished itself as a place of indeterminacy and radical subversion, characterized by fluid margins and constant motion. In 2002, Careof left the suburbs for the city and moved to Fabbrica del Vapore, where it is still located. This industrial building from the early twentieth century was initially meant for the construction, maintenance, and sale of railway and tram materials. Careof is based in the heart of Chinatown, one of the oldest Asian communities of Milan, which has shaped the area since the Fascist era. In 2014, a new staff launched an ambitious project, Taking Careof, with the aim of taking care of the long history of the institution and, at the same time, keeping it alive and establishing a responsible, cultural, and political practice. Careof fosters creativity and artistic experimentation in every expression and form. It is a place where young artists can be inspired and exchange views. We focus on contemporary art, sharing experiences and hybrid projects through an exhibition space, a huge archive, and an international residency program. Our video archive is a rich collection reflecting the last forty years of contemporary art research of moving images. It includes over 8,000 pieces and is the most important collection of video art in Italy: the archive holds over 7,000 artworks, ranging from the first experiments made in the ’70s to works by the latest generations, and about 1,000 videos documenting exhibitions, conferences, performances, and art events of international relevance.
